Ghost Heart (Saq Uk’ux)

Art Installation by Valeria Leiva and Hsinyi Lin
Installation: Mycelium, glass, computer, cables, ECG sensor, oscilloscope

Saq U’kux (Ghost Heart) is an artistic and philosophical project that merges art, science, and spirituality. The installation, composed of glass and mycelium and electronics, uses the metaphor of mycelium as the heart of life. Just as the heart pumps blood through the body, mycelium circulates nutrients beneath the surface, forming the hidden life force that sustains ecosystems.

The glass sculpture represents a ghost heart stripped of blood, symbolizing the life force that pulses through all things. An ECG sensor connected to the mycelium heart detects its electrical signals, which are then displayed on the oscilloscope, visualizing the line of life as an electrocardiogram. This dynamic representation transforms the organic pulse of the fungus into a digital symbol of life itself.

This project invites the viewer to contemplate the deep interconnectedness of life, where mycelium is not just a biological entity, but a spiritual and energetic force that as a heart keep and connects all living things.
